Keith and music

Keith loved music, and he had great taste in it, too. He used to love to listen to KCRW, either in his car, at home, or streaming over the Web.

I thought I had pretty good taste in music, but it never stopped Keith from joshing around with me. Recently, I purchased a ton of guilty 80s pleasure music from iTunes, stuff I used to love back in the day. Keith joked with me that, in fact, there was some NEW music out there.

Then I played Style Council, and apparently it brought back some 80s memories for him, too. I guess he loved Style Council.

Know anything about Keith's musical tastes? What he liked in high school? What he listened to at work? Post a comment below.

I was visiting Keith in Los Angeles about a couple of years ago, and we were driving through the hills of Hollywood in his new Saab. He was like a kid, so excited about this car.

I looked at the dashboard and saw this cool little digital display that said KCRW was playing, and noted what song was on. I said, "wow, that's cool."

Keith, deadpan, looked at me and said, "yeah, this car actually streams iTunes through wireless internet. Pretty cool, huh?"

I was amazed. "Woah, that's totally awesome, man!"

He just smiled, wryly, and said, "Dude, what is wrong with you? I don't have internet in my car. I was yanking your chain. Aren't you like the technology designer or something?" We both started laughing at this typically Keith-type prank: simple, snarky and funny.

Keith and I shared a lot in common when it came to musical tastes. Which was a good thing because when we worked at Imagistic, we'd play our music out loud when we were working late.

Sometimes he'd turn me onto some new tuneage, and sometimes I'd actually find something he hadn't heard.

Here is some music I know Keith liked (but I'm sure it's just the tip of the iceberg):

Air (Keith introduced me to Moon Safari)

Buena Vista Social Club

The Clash

Cocteau Twins

Dimitri from Paris

DJ Armin Van Buuren

Everything But The Girl

Henryk Gorecki

Gorillaz

Jill Scott

John Coltrane

John Lurie (& The Lounge Lizards) (aka, The Legendary Marvin Pontiac)

Joy Division

Love and Rockets

Massive Attack

New Order

Nicola Conte

Nouvelle Vague

Radiohead

Roxy Music / Brian Ferry

Stan Getz

Style Council

Thievery Corporation

Oh, yes, I forgot: Keith loved to stream Internet radio through iTunes. I know he liked kcrw.com, but also Groove Salad from SOMAFM.com

I sat right next to his office and sometimes took of my headphones so I can hear the music he played. It was perk that we liked the same kind of music.
